Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared ‘[…] a new cold war’ against the west today. In a long, televised speech, he laid out his plan to invade Ukraine by using a flimsily constructed diplomatic agreement with two ‘independent nations’ that are a part of Ukraine to seemingly allow Russia to then ‘help’ these nations defend themselves. This is how Putin wants to frame his eventual invasion — as an effort to assist new allies.
He explicitly laid out his belief that sanctions would be applied to Russia no matter what happens and that he sees the wests reactions an inevitable.
Representatives of nations around the world are now calling for sanctions now instead of waiting for Ukraine to be attacked.
This action by Putin threatens the entire post cold war European order and could potentially entangle the entire region into conflict.
Putin has stated that Kyiv (the Ukrainian Government) needs to essentially abandon these regions of Ukraine and hand them over to Russia or Kyiv itself will be held responsible. This would be Putin’s preferred solution, to have Ukraine simply crumble and fall to pieces bit by bit without firing a shot (figuratively speaking). Though it is assumed that Kyiv will not capitulate and that Russia is fully prepared to strike Kyiv, a city of approximately 3 Million people, in Putin’s quest to rebuild the Russian empire in his image.
The UK defense minister has indicated that they would be ready with cyber attacks should Russia try to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine or attempt to impede trade.
The US government has announced it will consider additional actions tomorrow in response to Russia’s actions today, including sanctions.
The European Union has announced it will impose sanctions on Russia as well but had not yet reveled the scope.
This is a quickly developing situation, there will be more to come.
