CBS News is reporting that Mitch McConnell supports impeachment and is ‘pleased’ that Democrats will be sending articles to the Senate. McConnell has remarked to his aids that he believes Trump has committed impeachable offenses.
Reporting indicates McConnell may vote to convict President Trump, but will not make any public announcement until he’s reviewed the legal arguments made in the House’s articles.
NEW: A person close to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell tells CBS News that the leader supports impeaching Pres. Trump but will not publicly discuss his views until the House formally sends the article of impeachment to the Senate for a trial. https://t.co/02h5cjulUf
This could make conviction much more likely as Mitch will according to the report indicate his position BEFORE voting in the Senate begins, giving Republican members time to adjust their positions accordingly.
Additionally Senate leadership is looking to move up the trial to Friday the 15th of this week. There’s not much reason to move the trial up if McConnell though the result would be to acquit. This indicates there’s a change in beliefs that a conviction may be likely.
Mitch McConnell’s office is now saying he will NOT convene the Senate under emergency authority.
McConnell sends an email to his colleagues, which says: “While the press has been full of speculation, I have not made a final decision on how I will vote and I intend to listen to the legal arguments when they are presented to the Senate.”
